Criminals are always on the lookout for easy targets, such as suburban houses, flats and complexes. If you live in one of these then there is a very high likelihood that criminals are keeping an eye on what is going on.
The challenge for residents is to look out for the signs that criminals are on the lookout and targeting their area. The criminals usually understand how to hide their scouting activities from the casual observer, so it is in your best interest to be aware of how they do this.
Be aware of the following 3 signs:
- Strangers loiter in the area for long periods of time without speaking to anyone, and appearing to be busy on their phones.
- Strangers’ vehicles are parked in the area for extended periods with the occupants not exiting the vehicles.
- Construction teams in your area randomly check the neighbourhood during tea and lunch breaks.
If you observe any of the above signs in your residential area, there is a high likelihood that break-ins and robberies are going to follow. Do not let this go by without taking action. Do not approach the suspected criminals yourself, but rather let the professionals handle the situation:
- Report the activity to your security company
- Inform your local residents’ association
- Inform your Community Policing Forum
- Call the Police
