Most areas have Community Policing Forums (CPF) in place, but most residents are barely aware of this. The only time they hear about their local CPF is when some crime has happened in the area.
Often the CPF cannot be effective simply because local residents are not aware of them or interested.
Ironically, your local CPF can actually make a very real difference to the security in your area, and there are many examples throughout the country where this has been the case. However, it can only happen if there truly is a great working relationship in place between the residents and the police.
But what exactly are the services provided by a CPF?
- Community Policing Forums educate the community on issues of awareness and train them in the skills of reporting crime activities without you having to be at the police station.
- Forums assist you in engaging your staff and helping them to become proactive and understanding crime awareness.
- They help communities get to know each other and to share ideas on fighting crime.
- Ask your security company how to become an active Community Police Forum member and find out where and when forums take place.
- Engage with your neighbours about security issues.
Don’t rely on other residents to keep your suburb safe. Rather take the initiative and get involved in your local CPF. The things you will learn at a CPF will stand you in good stead as a measure of keeping your own family and property safe, and you will be doing a great service to your community as well.
